Origin of the strategic partnership

The collaboration stemmed from the close relationship between Hisashi Koinuma, president of Koei Tecmo, and Atsushi Inaba, CEO of PlatinumGames.

They pitched the idea to Phil Spencer of Microsoft, who approved the project to revive the series.

Yasuda emphasized that PlatinumGames’ expertise in titles like Bayonetta and Nier: Automata complements Team Ninja’s legacy in Nioh and Rise of the Ronin.

Story in transformed Tokyo

The story is set years after Ninja Gaiden 3, in a cyberpunk Tokyo affected by the return of the Dark Dragon.

Yakumo, a ninja from the Raven Clan, is tasked with destroying the dragon’s carcass, the source of a miasmic rain corrupting the city and causing chaos with demons and cybernetic creatures.

He infiltrates the Divine Dragon Order’s base to eliminate Seori, a captured priestess who conspired with demons to resurrect the entity.

Ryu Hayabusa, protector of the order, confronts Yakumo, establishing a rivalry that evolves throughout the campaign.

Players initially control Yakumo, with Hayabusa playable in key sections, revealing connections between the rival clans.

Protagonists and contrasting visuals

Yakumo emerges as a young, brooding character with arm tattoos and a technological aesthetic appealing to modern players.

His design emphasizes agility and innovation, differing from Ryu Hayabusa’s traditional, honorable look.

The visual dichotomy reflects themes of tradition versus modernity, with Tokyo showcasing neon rain and oppressive shadows.

Unreal Engine 5 graphics ensure stable 60 FPS, with support for 120 FPS in high-performance modes.

Elevated combat mechanics

The combat system maintains a pure hack’n’slash focus, prioritizing direct confrontations over extensive exploration.

Quick weapon swapping allows switching items during combos without pausing the menu, enhancing fluidity against enemy groups.

Enemies adapt patterns based on the player’s style, requiring precise parries and timely counterattacks.

Difficulty modes include assists like auto-dodge for newcomers and “Death Wish” for veterans.

Technological altars from the Raven Clan serve as checkpoints, enabling item restocking and training with Tyran, Yakumo’s mentor.

These innovations elevate the series, with over 20 initial weapons and upgrades via side missions.

Platforms and accessibility

Ninja Gaiden 4 launches simultaneously on multiple platforms, with download sizes ranging from 23 GB on PS5 to 55 GB on PC.

Pre-loading is available on Game Pass, facilitating immediate access.

Console versions support cross-save, enabling continuity between Xbox and PC.

Altars and narrative support

Altars scattered across Tokyo offer interactions beyond checkpoints.

They include side mission deliveries that expand the lore of the clan and order.

NPC conversations reveal backstory about Seori and the dragon without disrupting the action’s pace.

Tyran provides tutorials for advanced techniques, such as aerial combos and brutal finishers.

This system integrates practical support into the immersive world, maintaining a linear progression focus.

Launch preparation

The game arrives in a year dubbed the “Year of the Ninja” by Team Ninja, celebrating the studio’s 30th anniversary.

Pre-orders include exclusive skins, like “Dark Dragon Descendant” for Yakumo.

Initial updates address ray tracing and 3D audio optimizations.

Fans can expect post-launch patches with optional online challenges.
