Medvedev defeats Zverev in straight sets to advance in China Open quarterfinals

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev defeated German Alexander Zverev in the China Open quarterfinals in Peking on Monday (29). Medvedev won 6-2, 6-3 in a match lasting under an hour and a half. The clash took place on the covered clay of Diamond Court, with Medvedev capitalizing on his opponent’s errors to reach the semifinals.

Zverev, currently ranked world number three, struggled to find his usual form and committed crucial double faults. Medvedev, the eighth seed, displayed efficiency in serving and returning. The victory strengthens their rivalry, with the Russian leading 13-7 in head-to-head matchups.

The match began with Medvedev breaking Zverev’s serve in the opening game. The German fought to recover but faced relentless pressure from the Russian.

Head-to-head history favors Medvedev

The rivalry between Medvedev and Zverev dates back to 2016, with the Russian winning 13 of 20 encounters. In 2024, Medvedev had already beaten the German in the Australian Open semifinals.

Zverev won the first four matchups, but the tide turned since 2019. In the China Open, Medvedev aims for a title to end his trophy drought.

The German, a finalist in Melbourne this year, has 23 hard-court wins this season. However, poor returning hurt his performance.

Zverev’s path to Peking

Zverev reached the quarterfinals after defeating Lorenzo Sonego and Corentin Moutet. Against Sonego, he won 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets.

Against Moutet, he needed three sets: 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Zverev hit 35 aces in the tournament but faltered in key moments against Medvedev.

The loss halts his streak of Masters 1000 semifinals. Zverev now shifts focus to the rest of the Asian swing.

Medvedev, meanwhile, beat Cameron Norrie and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina without dropping a set. The Russian has 15 hard-court wins this year.

Upcoming challenges for the Russian

In the semifinals, Medvedev faces the winner of Jannik Sinner vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas. Sinner, world number one, leads their head-to-head 8-7.

Tsitsipas, the tenth seed, recently beat the Greek in Shanghai. The match promises balance, with Medvedev favored by current form.

The China Open offers crucial ATP ranking points. Medvedev seeks his 21st title, his first since Rome in 2023.

Zverev lamented errors post-match but praised his rival. The tournament continues with semifinals on Wednesday.
